KORA Community Guidelines

KORA is a short-video platform devoted to the voices, stories and cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. These guidelines say what is expected of everyone here, and what we do when they are not respected. They apply to everything you post: videos, captions, comments, display name and biography.

By creating an account, you accept these guidelines. We will revise them; each version carries a date, and you can always consult the one you accepted.

1. KORA is for adults only

You must be 18 or older to create an account. We ask for your date of birth at sign-up and refuse the account if it indicates less than eighteen years. An account we learn belongs to a minor is deleted.

This rule also governs what you post: a video depicting a minor in a sexualised, degrading or dangerous way is removed without warning and reported to the competent authorities.

2. What you post is yours, and you answer for it

You keep all rights to your videos. By publishing them, you only authorise us to host them, display them in the application, and make them reachable through a share link, for as long as you leave them published.

You warrant that you have the right to publish what you publish: you filmed it, or you have permission. This covers music, images and excerpts of other people's work.

You must also have the agreement of identifiable people you film. Posting a video of someone without their consent, particularly in a private place, is grounds for removal.

You alone are responsible for what you post, and for complying with the laws of the country where you live or from which you post. Content these guidelines allow may be prohibited elsewhere: it is for you to judge before posting it. KORA does not review content before it is published, and may remove a publication judged inappropriate or unlawful.

3. What has no place on KORA

We remove, and depending on severity suspend or delete the account:

Content that endangers people — threats, incitement to violence, harassment, intimidation, disclosure of private information (address, phone number, workplace) without consent.

Hate speech — content attacking a person or group because of their origin, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Sexually explicit content, and sexual nudity.

Gratuitous violence — scenes of severe injury, of cruelty toward people or animals, posted with no evident informational purpose.

Content promoting suicide, self-harm or eating disorders, or providing the means for them.

Illegal activity — sale of drugs, weapons or protected species, human trafficking, fraud.

Organised deception — impersonation, coordinated fake accounts, manipulation of counters, disinformation that endangers health or elections.

Spam — repetitive posting, clickbait, undisclosed promotion.

3a. Religion, politics and current affairs

These subjects have their place on KORA. You may present your faith, debate a policy, comment on the news, or criticise a belief, an institution or a leader. The limit is the same for everyone: we discuss ideas, we do not attack people. Calls to violence, insults aimed at believers or communities, and disinformation about an election (date, place, voting conditions) are removed.

Political parties and candidates may post like anyone else. Any paid, concealed or excessive political promotion is, however, prohibited: sponsored content, coordinated accounts, serial posting intended to flood feeds. During an election period, reports concerning the vote are reviewed first.

On these subjects more than any other, we rely on your sense of responsibility: what you post commits your word, and sometimes your safety.

4. Reporting

Every video carries a report button. Describe in a few words what seems wrong to you: that is what the person deciding will read.

A report removes nothing automatically. It is examined. If you want to stop seeing someone immediately, block them: their videos and comments disappear for you, and yours disappear for them.

We commit to reviewing reports within 21 days at most. Reports involving minors or an immediate threat are handled first.

5. What we do when a rule is broken

Depending on severity and repetition: removal of the content; a warning; temporary suspension; permanent deletion of the account. The gravest breaches — content involving minors, credible threats — lead to immediate deletion and, where applicable, a report to the authorities.

You may contest a decision by writing to [email protected] (or by post: KORA Social Network, 300-204, rue du Saint-Sacrement, Montréal (Québec) H2Y 1W8, Canada). We answer and re-examine. You have 14 days from notification of the decision to contest it. If you acknowledge it in the application, it becomes final.

6. Your account

You can delete your account at any time from the application, under Profile then Settings. Deletion is permanent: your profile, your videos, your files, your comments and your follows are erased and cannot be restored.

Content under a report is not kept aside: deleting your account erases it from our servers like everything else. The report itself remains, with the excerpt recorded when it was made, so that moderation can still decide.

These guidelines bind the publisher and any successor or company of the same group entrusted with the operation of KORA; such a change would be announced to you in the application.

These guidelines, and all content published on KORA, are governed by the laws in force in Québec and by the federal laws of Canada applicable there.
